Joint-friendly exercise swaps that still build muscle?
My joints (knees, shoulders, lower back) are getting fussier as I get older but I still want to train hard. What joint-friendly exercise swaps still build muscle without beating up the joints? Don't want to just stop lifting.
Re: Joint-friendly exercise swaps that still build muscle?
Loads of options - you can train hard and spare the joints:
  • Knees: leg press / hack squat / Bulgarian split squats instead of only heavy back squats; smith or machine work for control
  • Lower back: chest-supported rows, hip thrusts, RDLs lighter instead of heavy bent-over rows and max deadlifts
  • Shoulders: neutral-grip and dumbbell presses, landmine press instead of heavy straight-bar overhead

Machines and supported variations let you push the muscle hard with less joint stress.

Chest-supported rows for the lower back is a great idea, bent rows always aggravate it.

They take the spine right out of the equation while still hammering the back. Perfect swap for a fussy lower back.

Higher reps with controlled tempo also let you build muscle with lighter loads, which is much kinder on joints than always grinding heavy. You don't need max weight to grow - effort and control matter more.

And keep some pain-free range work for the cranky joints to maintain mobility. Working around the joints doesn't mean babying them entirely - just load them smartly. You can absolutely keep growing while protecting them.

Machine and supported swaps, neutral grips, higher-rep controlled work, keep pain-free mobility. That's a whole plan to keep training hard for years. Thank you all.
