Lifting belts: When to start using one?

I'm starting to lift heavier on my squats and deadlifts (hitting 1.5x bodyweight). Is it time to invest in a lifting belt? Or should I wait? I don't want it to become a crutch for a weak core.

A belt is not a crutch! It's a tool. It doesn't *replace* your core. It gives your core something to *brace against*. This increases intra-abdominal pressure (IAP) and makes your spine safer.

Rule of thumb: Use it on your heaviest sets (e.g., 85%+ of your 1RM). Don't use it for warm-ups.

What Pro said. It's not a brace like a medical corset. You have to *actively* breathe into it and push your abs *out* against it. When you learn to use it properly, it will increase your lift numbers. Now is a good time to get one and learn.

For squats/deadlifts, you want a 10mm or 13mm thick leather belt that is the *same width all the way around* (4 inches). The tapered ones are not as effective for creating IAP.

Okay, "tool not a crutch" is the right mindset. And 4-inch leather, 10mm. Got it. Time to go shopping. Thanks!
