Periodization gets presented as if every lifter needs an incredibly complicated yearly plan the research is more practical than that a systematic review found that periodized resistance training can provide an advantage for maximal strength compared with non-periodized training when volume is equated while differences in hypertrophy are much smaller that makes sense to me. You don't need to change everything every week you need a reason for changing training volume intensity or exercise emphasis for hypertrophy consistent quality training may be more important than making the spreadsheet look complicated.
I learned this after changing programs too often I made better progress once I gave each setup enough time to actually see what was working.
Keeping a few main lifts consistent helped me a lot It made it much easier to notice small improvements in strength and technique.
I like having a rough plan but leaving some room to adjust. If recovery is poor forcing the original plan usually just makes the session worse.
My training log became more useful than a complicated program looking back at what I lifted and how I felt helped me make smarter changes
The biggest improvement for me was learning when not to change something. Sometimes a boring routine is actually a sign that things are working.
