Good to know my instincts were right. Thanks, everyone!

Exactly! The goal before a workout is activation and preparation, not maximal flexibility. That comes later.

Studies have shown static stretching before high-power activities can indeed reduce performance. It's about activating muscles, not relaxing them before intense work.

It can definitely decrease power output temporarily. That's why dynamic is so important for performance.

Yes, absolutely. It makes my legs feel "loose" and not as powerful for the initial push-off on the bike.

Has anyone found that static stretching *before* a heavy lifting session actually *hinders* performance? I definitely notice a drop in strength.

It sounds like we're all generally on the same page regarding dynamic pre-activity. HealthExplorer, you hit on a good point about the "long-term flexibility" aspect of static stretching. It's a different goal entirely.

For me, it's about context. If I'm preparing for intense exercise, dynamic is non-negotiable. If I'm trying to improve my long-term flexibility, then static stretching, held for 30 seconds or more, is my choice, usually after a warm bath or shower.
